NEVER say never.

Never say never. Isn't that what they say?

I know for me, any time I have ever uttered that word, it has come back to bite me in the behind.

I will never let my baby have a pacifier.

My kids will never do that. (throw a tantrum in public, stay out past curfew, you fill in the blank here….)

I would never go to WalMart in my slippers. (Okay, I only did that one time, and my slippers kinda-sorta looked  like wanna-be Uggs.)

I’ll never be divorced.

I’m not moving ever again.(I said it when I moved to Norman Drive in the biggest little city, and three more times since...)

In my family, we will never live with someone without marrying them.

There.

Those last. three. nevers.

Not all that many years back, I recall voicing my holier-than-thou opinions loudly when each of my three children were getting serious with their now spouses/fiance' and decided to move in with them. Each of them politely listened to me lecture from my decoupaged soapbox,(Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free, marriage is a sacred thing...) and they then proceeded to make their own decisions and choices on the matter.

(I should add here that at the time of this last "never" speech, I myself was married to their father, and was thoroughly convinced that I was well on my way to the finish line in the happily -ever-after race.)

Ehem.

(Well, we all know how that turned out.)

Anyway.

Since then, I have come to realize that the things that are truly important in life aren’t things, that following your heart is the best GPS for finding happiness, and that you should never say never....

I’m moving.

And I’ll be sharing my new home (and my heart) with my Rock n’ Roll Buddy.

I feel for the first time in a very, very, very, long forever, happy. Content. Equal parts comfortable and excited, looking forward to what comes next.

  4. Your list of "nevers" sounds so much like mine years ago ... before I moved to Hawaii to live with my fiance who had taken a job there. Even though I was well into my 40s, I got the soapbox talk from my mom - ha!

I went with my heart and glad I did. And I'm happy you are doing the same . . . who wouldn't want to run toward happy and content? Your Rock n’ Roll Buddy is one lucky guy!

  11. Good for you Tracey! My "never say never" speech came about 10 years ago when after my divorce (after 23 years of marriage) I met my now husband....told myself and him I'd "never" marry again and yet here I am, about to celebrate 8 years of marriage this Wednesday the 12th.

Hope you have found your happily ever after!

  15. I've thought your Rock n Roll Buddy was the "one" since he played Santa for Carter last Christmas. I'm so happy for you to have found peace and contentment.

  16. Good luck Tracey! I hope you have nothing but peace and happiness. Of course that's what we all want but life has a way of butting in. We all, well most of us, gave the same talk to our kids. That was out of love too. They were young so I still believe that was the right talk. Just trying to protect them as much as possible. How long have you been in this last place? Between packing up for shows and moving I think right about now I be calling up Goodwill.

  17. Good for you, Tracey! Although, I'm sure you will never hear the end of it from your kids! : ) I guess turn about is fair play. I always say "never say never", because anything can happen at any time.

  22. Hey Tracey! So glad that you're happy! I just moved from the Biggest Little City to southern California yesterday. Maybe I'll get lucky and find "the one" here. He sure wasn't in Reno! I remember you telling me there were no guys in Reno worth dating. You were so right! It's great to be with family; isn't that what it's all about? Anyway, if you need boxes, Petco will put aside awesome boxes for you if you call and let them know.

  23. I have to say I am like Linda, thinking your R&R buddy was gay!

I'm very happy for you, and think that the living together thing is different for a grown woman than a young girl.

  26. Tracey,

I cannot tell you how disappointed I am to read this post, and it pains me to have to write this comment. I also know it won't be a popular comment and I will receive much backlash from it; however, I must obey God's word and speak out about what you've written.

You frequently talk about God and how good He's been to you. I agree. He has been very good to you. Maybe I've assumed too much by thinking you are a Christian what with your frequent mentioning of God, your Chrisitian themed Christmas decor (e.g., joy, peace, etc.) and the sage advice you gave to your daughters about not living with someone before marriage. The advice you gave to your daughters was not holier-than-thou, it was good and GODLY advice for anyone at any age.

I don't mean to be judgmental or holier-than-thou in commenting on this subject; rather, I'm simply speaking the word of God to you, and anyone else reading. You've posted it publicly so I am commenting publicly and hope that you will see this as a loving warning to yourself and others. I doubt that, at this point in time, I'll change your mind about living with your rock n' roll buddy with this comment (though, I would be extremely happy if you did change your mind...it's not too late), but I DO hope to steer other weak or impressionable Christians clear of such a tragic error in judgment and, more importantly, of willfully sinning against God. God has told us that we should NOT have sex outside of marriage. He takes the sin of fornication very seriously. You have a very large following and you are potentially leading others astray. (Luke 17:1-4; I Corinthians 5:1-13; 6:9-10; Galatians 5:9; 6:7-8)

    You're in my prayers.

  27. Hey congratulations Tracey for finding happiness! Maybe I should start listening to my heart instead of my sensible head.... And as one "mid-fifty" to another, you will not be leading me astray!

  28. Just wanted to add another "happy to see you happy" post.

And, I guess, I should also throw in a rousing "judge not, lest ye be judged" to the Crabapple Cora above...

If you're not going to enjoy your life, who is?

    Wishing you the best!

  29. Amen to what "SC" said. I LOVE your blog Tracey, I truly do, but I do have to admit, my heart sank when I read this. I think "SC" put this in words I couldn't have. She isn't judging, she is speaking the truth of the Word, something as fellow believers, we are called to do--even when it isn't easy. It doesn't make me love you or your blog any less. Loving the sinner and hating the sin is something I have to live and choose (by the grace of God) to do daily.

  30. I'm happy you shared your exciting news on your blog Tracey!

Why is that people that leave negative comments always do it anonymously? Is it because they shouldn't be judging others and they know it??? lol

I hope you and your Rock n' Roll buddy have a wonderful life together! You deserve all the happiness you are feeling now! I'm sooooo very happy for you!

  31. Hey Tracey,

    Congratulations girl!

This comment is for "SC" and "KA" I get so sick of these "religious" people who preach the BS and then don't have the guts to even sign your name! Shame on you both for hiding behind "GOD". The "H" word comes to mind on what I think of you.

My name is Joyce Janes and I'm not afraid to hide behind my opinions.

  35. Tracey I am so happy for you! I am sure this wasn't a decision you made lightly. From reading your blog I know you have a wonderful relationship with God, I am sure this wasn't a decision you made without lots of prayer and thought. God brought you and your Rock and Roll buddy together, share the love and celebrate the life and relationship he has blessed you both with. Have fun and enjoy this wonderful blessing of love!! Jeni

  36. Tracey, I've been reading your blog since right after your divorce...I am SO happy for you and your new love! I'm publicly saying here, I'm not religious, at all, but find I'm NOT nearly as judgemental, one way or the other, as most who are. In many religious circles, you became a SINNER when you divorced - whether it was your choice or not. BLEH!!! Life is too short. Enjoy EVERYDAY! This is WONDERFUL news and I agree with many comments above about spewing "judgement" anonymously on your special post...If you both end up in hell for living-in-sin, at least we'll know a lot of creative & happy people there!!!

  37. YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So happy for you! I have been wondering when we were going to hear some good news with R&R Buddy -- it seemed like maybe things were blossoming there from the very little bit we've read here!

P.S. I was confused at first, but then I did finally figure out that R&R Buddy and Camas Antiques Buddy are two different people! :-)

  39. Congratulations, Tracy! I'd noticed you mentioning him quite a bit, but for some reason, I thought you posted a while back that you and he were only friends. I hope you don't let others put doubt in your heart. Just as you want happiness for your children, God wants you to be happy too.

  40. I'm with the rest of you women (or men) who think 'good for you Tracey!'... I know it was a decision that you didn't make lightly. Be happy Tracey...that's the goal in this life...

Shame on SC and KA for judging you. I noticed that for the most part...SC's comment was mostly justifying her comment. It must be nice to be so perfect and 'God-like' that you feel you have been chosen by 'Him' to condemn another's life or lifestyle. Isn't there something in the bible about casting the first stone...? Tsk-tsk ladies (or gentlemen)...

  41. Everybody want to go to heaven, they just don't want God to be there when they show up.
"Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;who put darkness for light, and light for darkness;"(Isaiah 5:20) SC and KA are not judging you, rather it is the truth of the Holy Scriptures that is judging.
    -Linda

  42. Wow, I hadn't read the self-righteous comments till now. Why do people say it pains them to write a comment, when they didn't HAVE to write anything at all? Gah......

The world would be a happier place if people used their God-given inner compass and instincts, to find the truth about being a good human, rather than living their life through instructions, without original thought.

    ReplyDelete
  43. To those of you who have found it so necessary to couch your mean-spirited comments in bible verse, how about some of the social skills we learn in kindergarten--like "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."

  44. Tracey! This is wonderful! Oh, happy, happy! Through the challenges in my own little life, I have come to believe without a doubt, we are on this sweet earth to love and be loved. When we are fortunate to find someone who makes our little pea-pickin' heart sing, then that is such a gift, plain and simple! Best wishes!!! Love & Hugs to you!

  46. YES!!!! I have been following your blog for such a long time. And I am SO HAPPY for you.I kept wondering what was up with this Rock n Roll Buddy. You seemed to spend so much time with him, but I couldn't remember any hint of romance involved. I kept hoping. And now look, you two have come up with a future together. May it bring happiness for years and years to both of you. You've come so far from that old life. I'm proud of you. You are an inspiration.

  49. To those supposed Christians who felt they had to 'save' you, I have two words: Shut up.

Oh, and a few more from your handy Bible:
Judge not lest ye be judged.

Or do you just use quotes that work for you?

Sorry, Tracey, that you had to experience these people.
    Congratulations!
