It's not the size of your garden....

...it's what you do with it, right? My Barbie condo has a very...um...petite back yard, and an even more eensy weensy patio, but the nice spring weather we had yesterday has me thinking that I need to get some flowers, and patio things together so I can actually enjoy the outdoors. As you can see, I have plenty of flowerpots, just waiting for fresh flowers and herbs...

Now, I just need to decide if I am going to make my covered patio area a lil' living room, or a dining room (which is the way I am currently leaning...)..but I am not quite sure just yet. How about you? Do you find that you use your outdoor space for sitting and visiting, or more for eating and lingering around the table? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

  1. Hi Tracey! Funny that have just posted a little something about my tiny patio. It's hard to plan on something nice out there with the lack of space... I'd love to have a rose garden... right now I just grow a couple of potted petunias... I do actually like the idea of a little outdoor dining area. Lovely for spring/summer evenings... Blessings, Vanessa

  2. In Germany you will often see flower boxes filled to the brim, as the 1st focal point when looking out a window. Some people use trellises with vines to flank the sides of their balconies as well, which gives the space a real cozy feeling.

  3. How about a low, round table circled with comfy chairs "for sitting and visiting & eating and lingering", the best of both!

  4. This will be my third summer on my patio....downsizing from a good sized yard. This year I just tossed all my old notions to the wind and went with a round table with comfy chairs. I have plants growing around the edges and this really works best for this small area. I find getting rid of all the pots that make me feel guilty and making things simple help me relax!!! I'm really getting this "less it best" thing.
    Best,

  5. Why can't you get an outdoor couch and use it as outdoor living room seating as well as outdoor dining room seating? Get a small table and maybe a side chair. Our deck is small and multipurpose. A folding bistro table is available to put out there as needed. Two wooden outdoor chairs are there all of the time, along with lots of pots and a potting bench that has turned into an outdoor cooking station.

  6. We use our outside covered area for just sitting and enjoying.
Usually, the bugs are busy bugging us.

But from what I know of you, you will make it both in the most cleverest way! I'm looking forward to seeing the results.

  7. When we installed our patio a few years back I opted to buy a round table that also has a built in firepit/copper bowl for a cooler...best of both worlds for me as we can eat on the table or enjoy just sitting out...on cooler evenings we can light a fire in the pit..the table is low with comfy chairs and has a durable tile top.

  8. I'm blessed with a large porch and we do use it as an extension to our smaller home. It's used for both dining and chatting. I know whatever you decide to do Tracey it will be warm and inviting with a touch of your wonderful whimsey.

  9. Tracie~ We use our porch alot. And the porch on the new little house we are already using even though we aren't moved in yet. Hmm.. If I had a small patio , what would I do??? I am thinking dining ... because you can dine, and still sit and visit. Have your coffee , etc. But... either way would be great!
    Have a pretty day!

  10. Hopefully the weather will cooperate, we have had one wet spring here in the NW, I can't wait to be outside more. I vote for dinning.

  12. I tried to do both in my small patio. I have a settee and a small folding table that I can pull up to it and then i just sit a chair across the other side of the table! The best of both worlds...

  13. wherever I am my favorite place is outside - in the shade if the sun is high in the sky - for reading, writing, visiting, eating, enjoying friends and just plain old-fashioned breathing. I love this site and so happy that I stumbled upon it. Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions and bright ideas.
